Weekly News Update for March 13

Good Friday morning everyone (or Saturday morning if you are getting this by email). Below are a couple of items you might find useful:


New ALEI Publication Released – Ashley Newhall and Paul Goeringer have finalized a publication giving a general overview of business organization structures typically utilized in agricultural businesses. This information can be helpful to those new producers looking to start their first farm. The publication is titled Using a Business Organization Structure to Limit Your Farm’s Liability and is available at: http://drum.lib.umd.edu/handle/1903/16325.


Crop Insurance Deadline – Remember that the deadline for most spring planted crops, Whole-Farm Revenue Protection, and the new Supplemental Coverage Option is March 16. March 16 is also a deadline for many spring planted crops covered by NAP.


Three Tips for Tenants – Sara Schafer has a good column up on agweb.com discussing 3 tips for tenants to enrich the landlord relationship. For many of you, they will be things you are already doing. But for new producers, these tips are things you will want to take under consideration as you start your operation. Montgomery County Proposed Pesticide Ordinance – The Washington Post ran a story earlier this week looking at the proposed cosmetic ban of pesticide use ordinance in Montgomery County. The article is available at http://wapo.st/1Gr61cd.


Agrisure Viptera® Litigation – Lisa Schlessinger and Bryan Endres have provided a good overview of the recent lawsuits filed against Syngenta for the release of Agrisure Viptera ® into the world market prior to approval by key export countries. The overview lays out this recent lawsuit involving StarLink corn and LLRice 601. The overview is available here http://bit.ly/1CIsbZP.  In other news on that front, a group of farmers recently added to Syngenta’s problems by claiming the company violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, http://bit.ly/1vLmTKE.

Farm Bill Signup Deadlines Fast Approaching – March 31 is the deadline for producers to make their commodity program decision and to make final decisions on base acre reallocation and updating payment yields. Call your county Farm Service Agency to schedule the appointment.
